Information > Characters > Yusuke Yusuke Urameshi :: The hero of the story. Yusuke Urameshi is a troubled juvenile at the start of the series. Many of his teachers hate him, and they go out of their way to give Yusuke trouble. Even Yusuke's name alone strikes fear into anyone who has even heard of him. When Yusuke gets struck down by a speeding car while saving a little boy's life, things change drastically. However his death was unexpected and Yusuke was given another chance at life. He had to go through an ordeal to hatch a spirit egg that fed off of his energy. If his energy was negative from negative actions, a beast would hatch and devour him. On the flip side, if he did positive things, a guide would emerge from the egg and lead his soul back to his body. When Yusuke's girlfriend Kayko was stuck in a fire, Yusuke gave up his only chance at coming back to save her by using the power of the egg. However, Koenma decided that Yusuke had passed the test and Yusuke was granted his life back, but as a price Yusuke had to take on the position as a Spirit Detective solving cases for the Spirit World. In Yusuke's first case as Spirit Detective he had to stop three demons who had stolen the great Artifacts of Darkness. To aide Yusuke, Koenma granted Yusuke with the Spirit Gun, which is when spirit energy is channeled tp the index finger and projected outward like a bullet. Yusuke was also given Detective Items from Botan, such as: the Concentration Ring, the Demon Compass, and the Spirit Spyglass. He first encountered Gouki, and once Gouki transformed in to his true shape, Yusuke almost died until Botan distracted Gouki and escaped with Yusuke. He came back for more though, and defeated Gouki with his Spirit Gun by shooting Gouki while he had his mouth jammed open. Yusuke's next encounter with a demon was with Kurama. Kurama asked Yusuke to let him use the Forlorn Hope to save his dying mother's life and Yusuke managed to escape this encounter with a new ally. The final and toughest demon, Hiei was a different story. Hiei was determined not to make the mistakes Gouki and Kurama had made, and kidnapped Kayko to make sure of this. However by kidnapping Kayko, Hiei discovered that Yusuke's spirit energy increases greatly when his friend's lives are on the line. Hiei transformed in to his true form and was too much for Yusuke, so Yusuke had to resort to the Spirit Gun. Knowing exactly how Hiei would dodge, Yusuke fired his blast at the Forlorn Hope and it was reflected in to Hiei's back knocking Hiei out. Yusuke had finished his first case against overwhelming odds but still had some explaining to do with Kayko. The next case Yusuke took part in involved the powerful psychic Genkai. Genkai was aging and she wanted a successor to learn her powers before she died. Koenma feared that the demon Rando would try and get these powers so he sent Yusuke to win the tournament. Yusuke met up with his rival Kuwabara and together they battled their way through the tournament. When Kuwabara was in a fight against Rando, his true identity was revealed and Rando shrunk Kuwabara with a spell and crushed his bones. This set Yusuke off and he jumped in the fight against Rando. As the battle went on Rando had Yusuke trapped underwater with man-eating fish but a little insult from Kuwabara changed that. Yusuke was able to hit Rando with his Spirit Gun and when Rando tried his shrinking spell again, it failed because Yusuke's ears were clogged. The spell backfired and shrunk Rando, so Yusuke took the advantage and took out Rando. With Rando beaten Yusuke spent the next six months in intense training sessions with Genkai. As soon as Yusuke got back from his training, little time was spared before he was given his next case. The Four Saint Beasts had begun an invasion on Earth with Makai insects that burrow into humans and make them mindless slaves. Kuwabara joined Yusuke as they headed to Maze Castle, and when they got in to a bit of trouble Hiei and Kurama joined the party. Beast after beast was destroyed until only their leader remained and it was Yusuke who would fight him. But Suzaku had other plans, he ordered the humans under Makai control to kill Kayko. When Yusuke hears this, he starts getting desprate, and Suzaku tried to delay them getting to his tower. But they made a ladder using each others bodies for Yusuke to climb and he made it in to Suzaku's tower where he would have to fight the leader of the Saint Beasts all alone. However, Yusuke did have a few new tricks thanks to Genkai's training. Throughout their fight Suzaku proved he was no pushover, and when Yusuke came close to beating him, Suzaku multiplied his body in to seven, and used lightning to power his attacks against Yusuke. When Yusuke thought Kayko was dead, he lost hope and Suzaku started killing him slowly. But Kayko and Botan had managed to escape and Yusuke tried out a new move he learned from Genkai, the Shotgun, which is many "spirit bullets" being fired at once. He almost managed to kill the Suzaku's but they revived and multiplied again. In a last ditch effort, Yusuke used the Shotgun again, but this time from his life energy and he killed each Suzaku for good, thus saving everyone on Earth at the cost of his life. Kuwabara, Hiei and Kurama finally showed up, and Kuwabara gave Yusuke some of his life energy. Hiei and Kurama carried them back to Earth where Yusuke slept for three days. After a short break, Yusuke was confronted by Hiei on his way to school. Hiei handed Yusuke a tape from Koenma, and Yusuke watched it with Kuwabara at Kuwabara's house. Koenma told them that they had to save a demon named Yukina from a wretched human named Gonzo Tarukane. Yukina's tears turned in to very expensive jems, and Tarukane was making Yukina cry for the money. They also learned that Yukina was Hiei's sister, and bad things would happen if they didn't save her quick. If Hiei killed any human, he would have to be severely punished no matter what the circumstances, and if Hiei found out he probably would kill everyone at Tarukane's mansion, and Yusuke would have to arrest him. Yusuke, Kuwabara and Botan all went to Tarukane's mansion where they defeated wave after wave of demon guards. But little did they know that the might Toguro Brothers were working for Tarukane, and the odds were yet again stacked highly against them. The Toguro Brothers sent some of their best men from the Apparition Gang which hunted down demons after Yusuke and Kuwabara but they met every obstacle, and Yusuke seemed much stronger than before. Eventually the time came where Yusuke and Kuwabara met the Toguro Brothers face to face. Not even Yusuke's Spirit Gun worked against them, but Kuwabara wouldn't give up. Kuwabara and Yusuke came up with a plan and as Kuwabara charged, Yusuke hit Kuwabara with his Spirit Gun to propel him at the Toguros faster and it worked. They had freed Yukina and solved another case without having to arrest Hiei. Yusuke's strength lies in others needing him. If one of his friends is in trouble, or he is fighting for the people of Earth, Yusuke's spirit energy soars. Unlike most people as a battle gets more and more dangerous, he gets stronger rather than weaker. Yusuke's approach to fighting is to throw all his power and energy in to one blow. Many people disagreed with his methods, but Genkai saw a lot of potential in the way Yusuke fought, so she encouraged him to it. However when Yusuke puts all his energy in to one blow, it leaves him very weak. Every case Yusuke was sent in to, he was expected to be the loser as he was against almost impossible odds. Yet he was constantly defying the odds and he started to show his true potential as a fighter, and Spirit Detective.
