Information > Characters > Hiei Hiei :: A rogue and loner, Hiei leads a very mysterious life. Born as a fire demon to an ice demon mother, Hiei was an outcast and banished from his mother's village. Hiei managed to survive however, and started progressing his battle skills. Hiei made some close connections in the Spirit World, among them was a longtime friendship with Yoko Kurama. After initally fighting, Hiei and Kurama gained a mutual respect for each other and became friends. Hiei later learned he had a sister, but the odds of finding her were against him. So Hiei underwent a painful operation to have a Jagan eye implanted in his head. It not only allowed him incredible powers, but with it he could more easily sense his sister's energy. Even before Yusuke was appointed Spirit Detective of Earth, Hiei had a plan to take over the Earth. He allied himself with Kurama who had taken a human form, and another demon Gouki. Together they broke in to King Yama's vault in the Spirit World and stole the three Artifacts of Darkness. Because of his mastery with swords, Hiei took the Shadow Sword which had the ability to turn whatever it cuts in to a demon. When Yusuke entered the scene, Kurama turned his back on Hiei and Gouki and Hiei went to follow Kurama. After seeing Gouki defeated, and Kurama join Yusuke as an ally, Hiei was determined to kill Yusuke. He kidnapped Kayko and cut her with the Shadow Sword. When Yusuke found out he brought the two artifacts Yusuke had obtained from the other demons as a ransom. Hiei thought Yusuke would be an easy kill, but he soon found out that Yusuke was no mere human. As the fight went on Hiei realized he would have to transform to his true form to defeat Yusuke. So Hiei transformed and clearly had the advantage in strength and speed on Yusuke. Yusuke resorted to his Spirit Gun, and it reflected off a mirror in to Hiei's back. Hiei was defeated for now, but he vowed revenge on Yusuke. Later when Yusuke and Kuwabara went to fight the Four Saint Beasts, Koenma told Hiei and Kurama that all past misdeeds would be forgiven in exchange for their assistance. Hiei and Kurama accepted the offer, but Hiei didn't like the thought of being treated as equals. As they went deeper through Maze Castle, Hiei's skills proved invaluable and because Yusuke put his trust in Hiei, Hiei had a change of heart and started to like Yusuke. It came Hiei's turn to fight against the third beast, Seiryu. When another one of the beasts, Byakko, asked for Seiryu's help, Seiryu killed him and it offended Hiei greatly. Seiryu used his ice powers against Hiei, but Hiei with being a fire demon they did not affect him much. Hiei defeated Seiryu with his quick moves and sword very quickly. Then all Hiei, Kurama and Kuwabara could do was make a makeshift ladder of their bodies so Yusuke could enter the highest tower and fight their leader. Hiei and the others did not make it in time to help in the battle, but when Kuwabara gave up some of his energy to save Yusuke from dying, Hiei and Kurama carried them back home. Shortly after, Hiei was ordered to deliver a tape to Yusuke. Hiei did this task for Koenma and knew something was strange. Hiei's suspicions were correct as Yusuke's next assignment was to rescue his sister. Koenma did not want Hiei to know about this because he was scared Hiei would kill all the humans involved and Hiei was forbidden to take human life no matter what the cause was. Hiei found out, and just as Yusuke and Kuwabara were wrapping up the case, he stopped the human, Gonzo Tarukane, who had kidnapped his sister Yukina. Hiei started beating Tarukane to a pulp and even Yusuke's words didn't affect Hiei. As Hiei was about to land the final blow, Yukina stopped him because she didn't want any more deaths on her behalf. Hiei didn't want to make her sad so he accepted this. However Yukina told Hiei there was something familar about him. When Yukina asked who Hiei was he responded no one and told the others not to tell Yukina who he was. When Yukina left to go back to the world of ice, Hiei explained that he is a criminal and Yukina would be more happy not knowing about him, however Hiei also hid other reasons from everyone else and the reason he had his Jagan implanted in the first place. Hiei is a very talented fighter and has many strengths. Despite his size he very strong, and agile. Hiei is a master of many weapons but favors a sword. Although reformed, Hiei is not completely good. Hiei also follows a very strict honor code that is very complex. He has been a loner since he was forced away from his mother, and does not allow his heart to get in his way, except for with his sister Yukina. Hiei often has mini clashes with Kuwabara as his comments towards Kuwabara are usually not well intended. However Hiei has a deep respect for every member of the Spirit Detective team, although he would never admit it.
